better a late magpie tale about sweet relief?

Magpie bath

Okay, this is last week's Magpie Tales prompt.  I loved the prompt, I just didn't get it together.  But then yesterday I was talking about the inspiration I find in Victoria Williams and I mentioned the Sweet Relief benefit album(s) of the nineties, and I thought of this song – another oft-played favourite of Victoria's songs in my home, this time interpreted by "that firecracker" Maria McKee.

I couldn't pull it together for the Magpie Tales Tuesday launch, and I've already started to write this week's "tale" based on this week's Magpie prompt.  But what the hell – Victoria said pretty much what I was not able to pull together, so better late than never, I say.

(Bad video – gets cut off at the end.  But just buy it on i-tunes, or dare I say it – buy the album on CD!  You'll be glad you did.)

Oh, how I love Maria McKee. I killed my Lone Justice cassette by playing it over and over an over.

Oh, I love her too Lisa. I wish I had one ounce of her lusty. I saw Lone Justice back up U2 for the Unforgettable Fire tour. I played to death a couple of her albums from the nineties. She’s one of the FEW people who can get away with covering a Van Morrison song as far as I’m concerned. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve never heard of Victoria Williams Jennifer. I know Lucinda Williams. Victoria must be one of those well kept Canadian secrets like our very own Paul Kelly who writes fabulous songs about love and about being Australian capturing the essence of that experience.

The quality of the video is no good really, but it’s interesting how I find it to be adding to the video – as if it’s adding something unique and helps tell a story.

Actually Lucinda Williams (no relation) sang on the Sweet Relief benefit album too Steve – she’s terrific. I’m afraid Canada can’t claim Victoria, she’s from the deep south in the US!
Will definitely check out Paul Kelly – I love artists that capture the essence of “place.” I think the best ones who do that in Canada are (the now defunct) Rheostatics. Everything they did seemed to be about being Canadian.

I agree Julia. I wondered if some of the graininess in the video was part of the original…
